Opening Liturgy Remarks by Karen Luna, Synod Coordinator (video below)

Good morning and thank you for joining us today. My name is Karen Luna, Coordinator of  Young Adult Ministry and I will be serving as your Synod process Coordinator. We also present today our Synod Steering Committee.  Today, we begin the Diocesan phase for the Synod on Synodality whose theme is “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission.” What an exciting time this is!

Pope Francis is asking that the entire Church participate in this Synod, that means all of us. As a young adult mother, wife and member of this community of believers, I am encouraged by this call to participation for all and honored to witness what will be a time of renewal for our Church.  This moment in our Church is an important time to stop and reflect on how we have been journeying together and what the Spirit is inviting us to consider as we move forward grounded in the Word of God. Synodality, modeled by Jesus in the Gospels, invites each of us to participate. Practicing synodality is journeying together. We hope to rise to the task that Pope Francis calls us to: to pray with each other, to listen to each other, to encounter the other, and to discern as a community where the Spirit is leading us to. 

Our Archdiocese is preparing this process to which all are invited.  We will pray, listen and talk with one another through parish and community listening sessions and Archdiocesan listening sessions. We specially pray to include those voices that are often forgotten and neglected. Our goal is to begin to embody a truly synodal church walking together, companions in this journey of faith. 

We invite you to share with your communities this invitation and encourage you to begin conversations in your respective communities.  You can visit our website to see how you can participate and look forward to our listening sessions scheduled to take place in January and February of next year. In the meantime, we can begin to foster the spirit of synodality in our communities and in our homes.

Mi nombre es Karen Luna, Coordinadora del Ministerio de Jóvenes Adultos y estaré sirviendo como su Coordinadora del proceso del Sínodo. También presentamos hoy nuestro Comité Directivo del Sínodo [señalarlos]. Hoy comenzamos la fase diocesana del Sínodo sobre sinodalidad, cuyo tema es “Por una Iglesia sinodal: comunión, participación y misión”. ¡Qué momento tan emocionante es este!

El Papa Francisco pide que toda la Iglesia participe en este Sínodo, es decir, todos nosotros. Como madre joven adulta, esposa y miembro de esta comunidad de creyentes, este llamado a la participación para todos me alienta y me honra ser testigo de lo que será un tiempo de renovación para nuestra Iglesia. Este momento en nuestra Iglesia es un momento importante para detenernos y reflexionar sobre cómo hemos estado caminando juntos y lo que el Espíritu nos invita a considerar a medida que avanzamos fundamentados en la Palabra de Dios. La sinodalidad, modelada por Jesús en los Evangelios, nos invita a participar. Practicar la sinodalidad es viajar juntos. Esperamos estar a la altura de la tarea a la que el Papa Francisco nos llama: rezar unos con otros, escucharnos, encontrarnos y discernir como comunidad hacia dónde nos lleva el Espíritu.

Nuestra Arquidiócesis está preparando este proceso al que todos están invitados. Oraremos, escucharemos y hablaremos unos con otros a través de sesiones de escucha parroquial y comunitaria y sesiones de escucha arquidiocesanas. Oramos especialmente para incluir esas voces que a menudo se olvidan y se descuidan. Nuestro objetivo es comenzar a encarnar una iglesia verdaderamente sinodal caminando juntos, compañeros en este camino de fe.

Los invitamos a compartir con sus comunidades esta invitación y los alentamos a iniciar conversaciones en sus respectivas comunidades.
